Set against the backdrop of bullying and a vicious beating, this is the story of a shy and lonely teenager's summer of renewal and hope. As teen Scott Walsh recovers from a brutal attack that almost killed him he has vowed never to leave his house alone again. That is, until his new neighbors move in. It is an African-American family of three. The mother is a famous artist, the father a diplomat leading a study at Harvard and the daughter, Trinity, is about his age and blind. They slowly begin to interact with the fearful boy and surrounded by a unforgettable cast of punks, intellectuals, artists, eccentrics and newfound friends the summer becomes an adventure in healing and hope for all.

Filled With Nothing A story of hope set against the backdrop of bullying and teenage violence Mr Wm Andrew McAdoo 9781477521663 Books

By the title, I anticipated that "Filled With Nothing" would lead me down a tragic path with a disheartening ending. What I found was a story of the tragic truth of what is happening to our children all across the country in terms of disconnected families, parents and friends - a disconnection that all too often ends in the demise of a young person whose life could have gone in a very different direction with just a little help, hope and encouragement. What I found in this book was HOPE. It is a good parable for those who think they have no power to help change the life of another. One friend ... one adult...just one other person can help someone who has taken self-exile as the chosen path to a new world. I loved the use of a friend who is blind. Her "sight" and insight provide a wonderful foil for our broken hero. Her parents and their simple assessment of the situation make simple, everyday life a ceremony. Breaking out of the chain of self loathing and becoming someone who just might gain self respect takes our main character into a new realm: the realm of possibility.
I think my favorite part of the book is the very end: you get to imagine those possibilities!
This should be required reading for middle schoolers who privately face the judgment of their peers -- regardless of where they sit on the popularity chain. They need to know they are not alone and that it is OK to start building the network of friends and others who can help early on...before they get to the ultimate environs of peer pressure: high school and college.
Great job!

Filled With Nothing A story of hope set against the backdrop of bullying and teenage violence Mr Wm Andrew McAdoo 9781477521663 Books Reviews

Mr. McAdoo's debut novel, Filled With Nothing is nothing short of extraordinary. The book is a unique take on the subject matter told from a wrenching and personal perspective of the protagonist, Scott Walsh, with a cast of vivid characters who provide contrast and complement him. As someone who professionally deals with the scandal of bullying I appreciated the way the story was presented and how the characters reacted to their situation.

Filled With Nothing was jarring in how it connects you to the protagonist and brings the reader back to the rigors of adolescence. I was brought back to the horrors of being a victim of bullying and the shame of being the malefactor. Far from the being the ordinary dross treatment of the subject Mr. McAdoo presents us with a work where you witness Scott's metamorphosis from a victim to survivor and that of the aggressor to penitent with poignant humanity and skill. You can't read this without feeling Scott's pain, cheering on his recovery, and reveling in his triumph.

Mr. McAdoo provides you with everything you want in a story strong characters you learn from and with and an inspiring tale that leaves you with a better understanding of the human condition and the desire to be a better person. In the end Mr. McAdoo (and Scott) don't tell us, "It gets better," they show us.
This book would make a fabulous film. I would love to see another book of the same characters.
Filled With Nothing is a page turner from beginning to end. The characters are colorful, sympathetic and well developed. It's hard to believe this is the writer's first novel - I can't wait to see more from Wm. Andrew McAdoo!
This book was a great read. It brings up emotions from within that are buried deep. I think that everyone will find something in this book that triggers some kind of emotional response of early childhood memories from the brutal & sad parts of the book all the way to the joyous happy parts. This would be a very good required "summer reading" book for junior/high school children as it is filled with insight on so many different levels. I loved this book.
Wm. Andrew McAdoo did a remarkable job with some challenging topics. Having grown up in the area of this story, it felt like going home. I've walked these streets never thinking how difficult it might be for some people to do the same. Diverse characters all come together very nicely, positively contributing to the main theme. I would recommend this book for all. "Filled With Nothing" has left me anxious for more, I can't wait to see what Mr McAdoo has in store for us next.
This book was absolutely amazing. It is one of those books that has stuck with me days after and that I know will be with me for a long long time. The subject sounds difficult and it is, but the journey will leave you elated and having a new faith in the nature of humans. What a special find. Great story.
"Filled With Nothing" is simply put, an outstanding book! If anyone can read this story with a dry eye than I have to say they must not be human.

Thank you Mr. McAdoo for successfully transporting me back to my youth not just once, but multiple times even on the same page. This book is very well written and completely captivated me from beginning to end with a clever blend of truly lovable and unexpected characters. Hard to believe this is your first book. I love how you kept the story focused on the main character with just enough details about the other characters yet not enough to distract the reader from the subject at hand. I found it remarkably easy to identify and empathize with the awkwardly poised main character and became extremely eager to finish the book. At several points in the story I found myself on an emotional rollercoaster ride going from uncomfortable tears to a soothing laughter. From the T rides into Harvard square, or moseying about, everything this boy went through felt eerily familiar. It is unfortunate and sad to learn just how many people struggle to survive through as many, if not more, layers of hurt. Perhaps someone they know, or even themselves; Scott is undoubtedly a character that many folks will identify with.

"Filled With Nothing" is delightfully compelling, very satisfying and leaves me wanting more from the author. Children and adults alike will certainly benefit from reading this book and quite possibly bring hope and encouragment to the life of someone if not themself. It is a fabulous story and a must read for anyone who wants to be human. Kudos to you Bill!
